AAHSL is a leader in the ever-changing world of libraries, helping to define what they are becoming. SBI’s Louise S. Miller, MA, CAE has served as AAHSL’s Executive Director since 2008. AAHSL is a small organization with approximately 170 members, representing directors of health sciences libraries at the vast majority of US and Canadian medical schools and related organizations. They have a large number of active committees working in the areas of management and technology and for more than a decade, their Fellows Program, co-funded by the National Library of Medicine, has been successful in developing new library directors.

Moving AAHSL onto the MemberClicks association management system (AMS) helped improve their organization overall by consolidating their member database, communication tools, website, and event management into one platform. Through the AMS, they have created a support system for new and developing medical schools, and the use of listservs and other tools for connecting have enabled the community to stay close-knit despite geographical distance. Due to the infrastructure they have in place to support leaders of the association, they stay relevant and are able to easily support new institutions. They continue to evolve and grow, with approximately 170 members across North America.
